Pay Attention or Drift Away

Hebrews 2:1-3 (NIV)

We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

The writer of Hebrews says we are to pay closer attention to what we have heard. Why are we to pay closer attention? In chapter 1 the writer tells us that Christ as the Son of God is superior to the prophets and superior to the angels. The verb attention was commonly used to mean to bring a ship to land. This may be why the writer used the term drift away in the next clause. The things we have heard were the teachings of Christ and the gospel which we have before heard and acknowledged. The danger is that we might drift away. We drift along in our lives and we hear the Word of God and acknowledge in mentally, but we never apply it to out lives. We drift by and suddenly it is too late. If we reject the truth of God’s revelation of Christ, there is no other safe place before the catastrophe.

What makes this salvation great? Why “so great” salvation? Because Christ came with this great salvation that once and for all dealt with sin and took away sin. Jesus gave salvation its beginning. Jesus proclaimed, For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” (Luke 19:10) and “to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28). Jesus also said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor……Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:18-21). In addition the message of salvation in Christ was confirmed by eyewitnesses. In verse 4 is God’s confirmation of the message of salvation. By signs and wonders and various miracles, God indicated His involvement in the message of salvation. Many of these are recorded in the Acts.

The writer of Hebrews says if we do not pay closer attention to the Word of God, we will drift away; we will drift away from God’s word. We may know people to which this has happened. We may know someone experiencing this now. There is no urgency, no focused listening or no fixing their eyes on Jesus. You also may be neglecting this great salvation Jesus offers. During this time of prayer and fasting may the Holy Spirit move you to repent and cause you to “pay more careful attention” to the gospel of Christ. Also pray for those you know who are drifting away.

 2) O Lord, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid!
Psalm 22:19 (NLT)
