“And He began telling this parable: “A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. “And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ “And he answered and said to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’ ” And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.” (Luke 13:6-10, NASB95)
To illustrate His point Jesus taught in a parable that if fruit does not show in one’s life, judgment will come. A fig tree requires three years to bear figs, but since this one did not produce, the owner said, “Cut it down.” His vineyard keeper asked him to give it one more year. This parable illustrates the point made in verses 1-5 that judgment comes on those who do not repent. Here Jesus took the thought one step further and noted that fruit must be present (Matt. 3:7-10; Luke 8:15). A visible change must be seen in the life of one who claims to trust the Messiah. If there is no visible change that person, like the figless fig tree, is judged.
I also want you to take a look at the vineyard-keeper. He pleaded on behave of the fig tree. He asked the owner to give him one more year to dig around and put in fertilizer so the fig tree will bear fruit and be saved. Take a minute and picture yourself as the vineyard-keeper pleading for the fig tree. Now, instead of pleading for the fig tree plead for a person; a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor, enemy. Envision now that you ask the Lord to give you this year (2011) so you can water and fertilizer this person. This would give you one more year to help this person produce fruit in their life. James 5:19 – “Let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.” (NASB95) During your time of prayer and fasting has the Lord put someone in your life? Is there someone you can coach or mentor to know the love of Christ? Do you know someone who needs to hear the truth? During this time of prayer and fasting ask the Lord to put a burden on your heart for this person. Ask the Lord to let you be the vessel He uses to intervene in this persons life. Then be the water and fertilizer (salt and light) for this person and see what the Lord does. Pray that you will be a faithful witness for the Lord. Pray that you will follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and turn a sinner from the error of his way and save his soul from death.
